Smalec on a slice of bread is a traditional and very popular Polish food.
Smalec in its pure form is rendered pork fat or lard. It is of course used for cooking and is one of those items that is absolutely required to make faworki.
But then one of the most popular traditional foods is smalec with bacon chips added.
It is spread on bread, sometimes sliced pickles are placed atop it.
In most restaurants in Poland that serve traditional Polish food, smalec is available as an appetizer.
And many family gatherings including weddings serve a large offering of smalec.
